The WWF Prince Bernhard Scholarships (PBS) are awarded to individuals from East and South who wish to pursue formal studies or professional training in the field of conservation.

Who should apply?
As a priority, the PBS support mid-career training (up to a maximum of one year) for individuals working in the field of conservation or associated disciplines directly relevant to the delivery and promotion of conservation. Applications from candidates doing multiple-year studies will only be considered if the applicant is applying for support for the last year of studies.

Applications are encouraged from people seeking to build skills in specific subjects that will enhance their contribution to nature conservation. In particular, women and people working for non-governmental or community-based organizations are encouraged to apply.

Only nationals from Africa/Madagascar, Asia/Pacific, Latin America & Carribean, Eastern Europe & Middle East will be considered, including WWF staff or candidates working as partners with WWF. Preference is given to those seeking support for studies in their own country or region, and applicants must provide written proof of acceptance on a course.

Swiss Scholarships for Foreign Students

Swiss Government Scholarships for Foreign Students 2010
(for foreign students wishing to complete their education at a Swiss university)

Swiss Government Scholarships are awarded by the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS). They are by definition intended exclusively for foreign students who wish to complete their education at a Swiss university or federal institute of technology, such as the UNIGE.

They are awarded in accordance with a list of countries eligible for Swiss Federal Scholarships, drawn up at the beginning of every year.

The scholarships are reserved exclusively for candidates already in possession of a university degree from their home country. Applications are to be submitted to Swiss diplomatic representation in the candidate’s country of origin.

Candidates are strongly advised to begin taking the necessary steps roughly a year in advance.

Scholarships are granted for an academic year of nine months. An extension may be granted if the scholarship is needed to finance an educational programme lasting more than two semesters, and only if the recipient of the scholarship has successfully passed his or her first year of study.

The University of Geneva applicatin deadline is 28 February.

PhD position (Open Source Software)

The Chair of Systems Design, ETH Zurich, offers a position for a PhD student working in the project “On the Interplay between Social Interactions and Software Architecture in Open Source” funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF), starting as soon as possible.

This project brings together the fields of software engineering, statistical physics, and management to reap synergies between them and to advance the understanding of the complex socio-technological dynamics underlying Open Source Software, beyond the scope of one particular discipline.

The aims of this project are:

* To establish a holistic picture of the phenomenon of Open Source
* To understand the statistical laws governing the evolution of the software architecture, which may help developers to steer development towards favorable architectures
* To study the self-organization of projects and the resulting social dynamics, on the level of both software users and developers
* To analyze the link between software architecture and the project organization, as well as between the corresponding dynamics, which may enable new management principles or provide tools for smoothening the interface between software, developers, and users

Requirements:

* MSc degree or equivalent in computer science or a related field
* ability to develop formal models and computer simulations
* ability to combine data analysis and modeling
* good knowledge about graph algorithms and social network analysis is a plus
* strong abilities to communicate in an interdisciplinary scientific environment
* interest in becoming acquainted with methods from physics, economics, and management

4 four-year Ph.D. full scholarships available in the fall of 2010.

Mrs. Kathryn Davis, an HEI alumna who obtained her PhD in 1934, is founding four Ph.D. full scholarships for a four-year period.

Two of these grants (Kathryn Davis Grant and Shelby Cullom Davis Grant) are intended for students of any nationality

- having completed a degree programme in an American university.

Two other grants (Davis Grants) are intended for:

- two students coming from a Muslim country .

These grants will be attributed in the Spring of 2010 to students starting their PhD programme in September 2010 at the Institute exclusively. They will exempt them from tuition fees and provide a living allowance of 15000 CHF per year. They will last for a period of four years and will be renewed each year depending on the thesis progress.

International Ph.D. Programs in the Life Sciences

University of Zurich

Each program offers research and education opportunities in a stimulating international environment for ambitious students who wish to work towards a PhD degree. Accepted students perform their research project in one of the participating research groups of their favorite program, according to their scientific interest. Advanced teaching and training courses are offered throughout the curriculum. The program language is English throughout. PhD studies usually last 3-4 years.

Description:

Two PhD positions are available in the Computational Biology Group at the Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering of ETH Zurich in Basel. Our group is engaged in developing mathematical models and efficient algorithms for complex biosystems. We are particularly interested in disease-associated cellular networks and evolutionary dynamics, including genetic and epigenetic variation in cancer and infectious diseases. We seek two PhD students for the following research projects:

1) Analysis of deep sequencing data:

Development and application of statistical models and efficient algorithms for analyzing high-throughput next-generation sequencing data; haplotype inference of mixed virus and tumor samples; human SNP analysis in association studies; RNA-seq and ChIP-seq.

2) Reconstruction of cellular networks from perturbation data:

Probabilistic network reconstruction from RNAi data in the framework of graphical models; experimental design of RNAi screens; network analysis and comparison.

Successful applicants have a strong background in computational biology, mathematics, computer science, statistics, physics, or a related field, and exposure to modeling biological systems. Candidates are expected to engage in interdisciplinary research groups and to foster collaborations with biologists and bioengineers.

The Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering of ETH Zurich is an integral part of SystemX.ch, the Swiss initiative in Systems Biology. The Future Leader Scholarship award may be applied to the BSL Executive MBA

, Full-time MBA or Flex-MBA degree program. The Executive MBA takes place on Saturdays and is completed in 1½ years. The full-time and flex programs follow a modular format, with the full-time being completed in 1 year. Participants in the part-time, Flex-MBA determine their own study schedule and may take up to 3 years to complete. Tuition for an MBA at BSL is CHF 44,800.

The new MBA Scholarship programs begin in September, with guaranteed openings for those applying in May and June.

To apply for the scholarship, eligible candidates are asked to submit an essay of 2000-2500 words on how they will use a BSL MBA to achieve their professional vision(s). All applications and essays must be received by July 31, 2009.

National Center of Competence in Research – ‘Frontiers in Genetics’, Switzerland

Scholarship Starting in October 2009

Frontiers in Genetics proposes an international program for doctoral training, supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation. This program is based at the University of Geneva, and includes participating members from all of our NCCR’s institutions. The program starts in October 2009 and provides a strong background in molecular genetics and genomics to address cutting edge biological issues.

We wish to recruit outstanding candidates with a degree in biological sciences and a commitment to a career in research. The selected students will receive stipends for four years, providing they complete all program requirements.
