With the support of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), the International AIDS Society (IAS) has established a research fellowship programme focusing on HIV and drug use, with the goal of contributing to advances in the scientific understanding of drug use and HIV, while fostering international collaborative research on HIV and drug use (see FAQ for definition of research areas covered by the fellowship).

The fellowship programme is awarded as a stipend of US$75,000 in two categories: to a junior scientist for 18-month post-doctoral training, or to a well-established HIV researcher for an eight-month-long professional development training at leading host institutes excelling in HIV-related drug use research.

In 2011, three fellowships have been awarded. The fellows and their mentors have been invited to attend the 6th IAS Conference on HIV Pathogenesis, Treatment and Prevention (IAS 2011) in Rome, Italy, on 17-20 July 2011, where the awards ceremony took place.

Eligibility

Post-doctoral training: Junior investigators with a doctoral degree (e.g., PhD, MD) obtained no more than six years before the time of application in the fields of behavioural and social sciences, biological sciences, chemistry, engineering, mathematics, medicine, physics or public health (other disciplines may also be considered) are eligible. Applicants must hold a doctorate degree or equivalent before the start of the fellowship, but not necessarily when applying. Medical doctors who obtained a MD degree no more than eight years ago and who do not have extended research experience can be allowed to apply to a post-doctoral fellowship. They should contact ResearchPromotion@iasociety.org to check their eligibility.

Professional development training:

The fellowship is geared towards well-established HIV or drug use scientists who are not currently active in the field of HIV-related drug use research, with a minimum of seven years’ experience beyond post-doctoral level, and with a documented scientific record that includes peer-reviewed publications.

Applications are encouraged from any country, but preference will be given to applicants from low- and middle-income countries. As there are numerous national opportunities for research training within the US, applications from US citizens and permanent residents for fellowships within the US will not be accepted.
All applicants must choose a mentor in an institution different from their current institution (see FAQ for details).
Applicants must be able to start their fellowships before 1 June 2013.
Applications must be completed in English.

• The 2012 Emerge scholarships will be presented and winners recognized at an awards luncheon on Tuesday, February 28, 2012 in the metropolitan Atlanta, Georgia area. Each scholarship recipient must attend the awards dinner in order to qualify for her scholarship. Travel arrangements will be made by Emerge, and all expenses associated with travel and lodging will be paid by Emerge.

• Applicants for domestic scholarships must be a current resident of the United States (including Puerto Rico), or a U.S. citizen living abroad who is applying for study at an educational facility located within the United States. • Emerge provides international scholarships for study under the auspices of educational institutions and organizations that are equipped to properly screen and sponsor students who do not reside in the United States. INTERNATIONAL LEADERSHIP IN EDUCATION PROGRAM (ILEP)

The International Leaders in Education Program (ILEP) is a program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, and is implemented by IREX (the International Research & Exchanges Board), a Washington, DC based non-profit organization.

ILEP will consist of a semester-long academic program at a U.S. university, including coursework and intensive training in teaching methodologies, lesson planning, teaching strategies for their home environment, teacher leadership, as well as the use of computers for internet, word processing and as tools for teaching.

The semester-long program, which will commence in January 2012 and conclude in May 2012, will also include an internship at a secondary school to engage participants actively with the American teachers and students.

The Fellowship provides:

The Center for Tropical Forest Science (CTFS) is a global network of forest research plots committed to the study of tropical and temperate forest function and diversity. The multi-institutional network comprises more than thirty forest research plots across the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Europe, with a strong focus on tropical regions. CTFS monitors the growth and survival of about 3.5 million trees of approximately 7,500 species.

The CTFS Grants Program provides opportunities for senior researchers, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students to use existing CTFS plots to conduct research with scientists affiliated with them. Social scientists and natural scientists are encouraged to apply.

Who is eligible to apply?

The CTFS Grants Program is open to all researchers, from graduate students to senior scientists. In some cases, advanced undergraduates will also be considered. Preference will be given to scientists in the countries with CTFS sites and to all graduate students and postdoctoral researchers. Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply.

What should be included in the application?

• Cover Sheet. Include project title, name, contact information and nationality of principal investigator(s), duration of project, and status of PI(s). Please indicate study site(s) and whether the proposal is a repeat submission.
• Research Proposal.(not to exceed 1500 words; strictly enforced). The proposal must describe the proposed research, indicate its relevance to one or more CTFS plots, and explain the significance of the work to a broader discipline. The general format of the proposal should include: introduction, description of research project with clearly stated hypotheses, significance of research, detailed methods, anticipated outcomes, and bibliography/references. Note: Bibliography should not be counted as part of the word limit for the proposal.
• List of Collaborators. Provide a list of collaborators on the project. For graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, an advisor is also necessary. Host-country collaborators are strongly recommended. In addition, applicants must demonstrate that they have contacted plot directors BEFORE submitting a proposal.
• Curriculum Vitae. An applicant’s CV should include contact information, educational background, current and previous fellowships and grants, and research interests. Note: CV should not exceed two pages.
• Proposed Referees. Please provide a list of three people that could review the proposed research but who are not current collaborators or advisors.
• Detailed Budget and Timeline. A budget should include all costs related to carrying out proposed research. Please see above for expenses that can be included in the proposal. A budget justification is also suggested. A chronogram with the schedule for all research activities proposed should be included.

How will applications be evaluated?

Applicants are pre-evaluated by plot directors of proposed study sites and then evaluated by a panel of scientists associated with the CTFS network. Larger grant proposals will also be reviewed by outside scholars. Awards are made on the basis of the proposal’s merit, the applicant’s ability to carry out the proposed research, the likelihood that the research can be carried out in the proposed time frame, and the extent to which CTFS plots contribute to the proposed research.

Submissions will be accepted annually. The next deadline for applications is APRIL 1, 2011. Decisions will be made approximately three months after the deadline.

Program ini memberi kesempatan berharga bagi para penyiar dan jurnalis muda Indonesia untuk mendapat pengalaman kerja di salah satu organisasi penyiaran internasional ternama, VOA di Washington, DC. Peserta akan bergabung dengan tim VOA Indonesia yang dinamis, di mana mereka akan mengembangkan keterampilan untuk memproduksi berita dan informasi lainnya sesuai dengan standar tinggi jurnalistik dan penyiaran VOA. Selama 6-12 bulan di AS, mereka memberi kontribusi kepada program multimedia VOA Indonesia di televisi, radio, internet dan ponsel untuk menyampaikan informasi yang akurat, berimbang dan obyektif bagi khalayak di Indonesia.

Broadcasting Fellowship oleh PPIA-VOA juga merupakan perwujudan tujuan PPIA untuk meningkatkan pemahaman dan mempererat persahabatan antara Amerika Serikat dan Indonesia. Para peserta tak hanya memperoleh pengalaman profesional di VOA, mereka juga tinggal selama masa kerja tersebut di AS. Selama di sini, mereka berlaku sebagai duta tak resmi dari Indonesia di komunitas mereka di Amerika. Sekembalinya mereka ke Indonesia, mereka tidak hanya membawa kembali pengetahuan dan keterampilan yang mereka peroleh di VOA, tapi juga dapat membagi pengalaman mereka hidup di Amerika dengan rekan, tetangga, teman dan keluarga mereka.

Ketentuan Fellowship

Setiap tahunnya, PPIA dan VOA memilih dua penyiar atau jurnalis muda. Mereka yang dapat melamar untuk program ini adalah lulusan baru perguruan tinggi, atau mereka yang telah memiliki pengalaman kerja tidak lebih dari tiga tahun.

PPIA menanggung biaya yang muncul selama proses seleksi, permohonan visa AS dan tiket pesawat ke dan dari Amerika bagi para peserta. Akomodasi, biaya hidup dan asuransi kesehatan di Amerika ditanggung dengan gaji peserta selama bekerja untuk VOA.

VOA menyediakan visa J-1 bagi para peserta. Dengan visa J-1, peserta diwajibkan untuk kembali ke Indonesia dan tinggal selama sekurang-kurangnya dua tahun, sebelum dapat melamar untuk bekerja atau tinggal di Amerika. Dengan demikian, peserta dapat menyalurkan pengetahuan dan pengalaman mereka di tanah air sekembalinya dari program ini.

Kedua peserta terpilih setiap tahunnya akan memulai bekerja untuk VOA di bulan April.

Proses Seleksi

PPIA dan VOA membuka pendaftaran pada bulan Oktober. Tenggat waktu pendaftaran adalah 1 November. Dewan juri terdiri dari perwakilan PPIA dan VOA yang akan melakukan seleksi bertingkat terhadap para pelamar dan mengumumkan pemenang pada akhir Januari.
