Australia ALA Scholarships

Australian Leadership Awards Scholarships. Applications for the 2011 intake open on 10 March 2010 and close on 30 June 2010.

The Australian Leadership Awards (ALA) aim to develop leadership and build partnerships and linkages within the Asia-Pacific, while addressing priority development issues of the region.

The ALA program comprises ALA Scholarships and ALA Fellowships. These awards are for leaders or those who have potential for leadership roles that can influence social and economic reform, both in their own countries and in the Asia-Pacific region.

ALA Scholarships are for study at Masters or Doctorate level in an Australian university. Study programs must relate to a priority development area: disability, economic growth, education, environment, food security, gender, governance, health, human rights, infrastructure, regional stability, rural development, water and sanitation. ALA scholars also undertake a Leadership Development Program in Australia.

As ALA Scholarships are an investment in the future of the Asia-Pacific region, ALA scholars are required to return to their home country or the region for two years after they have completed their studies in Australia.

Selection for ALA Scholarships is competitive, based on leadership qualities, academic excellence and potential impact on return home.

Eligibility criteria for ALA Scholarships:

• You must be a citizen of one of these countries (Indonesia, Myanmar, Timor Leste, Philippines, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Caribbean: Antigua & Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Saint Kitts & Nevis, Saint Lucia, etc see here) and not hold or be married/engaged to someone who holds Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent residency (except for nationals of Niue, Tokelau and Cook Islands who also have NZ citizenship)
• You must not have held a scholarship to study outside your home country in the 24 months preceding the application closing date.
• You must have acceptable results from one of these English language proficiency tests, gained no longer than 24 months prior to the opening date of the Scholarship application period.

1. an IELTS Academic Test with a score of at least 6.5 (with no band less than 6), or
2. a TOEFL paper-based test score of at least 580, or
3. a TOEFL computer-based test score of at least 237, or
4. a TOEFL internet-based score of at least 92.

In recognition of academic excellence and leadership potential, NTU offers a variety of scholarships to new as well as current students pursuing their full-time undergraduate studies in NTU. Scholarships are generally awarded to students based on academic merit and good co-curricular records.

Nanyang Scholarship

The Nanyang Scholarships, Nanyang Technological University (NTU)’s foremost undergraduate scholarships are awarded to the outstanding freshmen pursuing undergraduate programmes. Nanyang Scholarship recognizes students who excel academically, demonstrate strong leadership potential, and possess outstanding CCA track records.

Eligibility

• Open to all nationalities.
• Successful awardees should read a full-time undergraduate degree programme leading to a first degree, with the exception of Biomedical Sciences & Chinese Medicine and the NTU-Georgia Tech Integrated Programmes where it will cover only the first three years of study in NTU.
• Possess outstanding Singapore-Cambridge GCE ‘A’ level, Local Polytechnic Diploma, NUS High School Diploma, IB Diploma or Year 12 equivalent qualifications.
• Excellent Co-Curricular Activities records.
• Strong leadership qualities and potential.

Nanyang Scholarship covers up to the normal programme duration on condition that the scholar maintains a record of good academic performance and conduct satisfactory to the University.

• Subsidised tuition fees will be fully covered.
• Living allowance of S$6,000 per academic year.

Terms & Conditions

• Scholar may not, without the approval of the University, hold concurrently any other scholarships, bursaries or university loans (except for one-time award or book prize).
• Nanyang Scholar is required to maintain a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.5 out of 5.0. Academic performance will be reviewed every semester.
• Nanyang Scholar is required to stay for at least one year in a hall of residence during your course of study and participate in university campus life.
• Nanyang Scholar is to undertake the role of Student Ambassador, or any other similar role, to represent the University as and when called upon.
• The Scholarship may be withdrawn at any time if, in the opinion of the University, the scholar’s progress or behaviour is deemed unsatisfactory.
• If the scholar decides to terminate the scholarship prematurely, the University reserves the right to impose a repayment on a case-by-case basis.
• Nanyang Scholar is required to attend all the Nanyang Scholars Programmes, i.e., Orientation, Award Ceremony and Leadership Training Programme, conducted by Office of Admissions and Financial Aid.

The same application period for admissions applies. Scholarships are awarded based on competition amongst shortlisted candidates.

PhD scholarship researchers who conduct PhD research within the scope of a cooperation between the University of Groningen and an institution in a developing country including Indonesia.

Value and purpose of grant: The grant will cover expenses incurred in traveling to and from the Netherlands (a maximum of 4 times) and the living costs during the stay at the RUG. A moderate research budget can be granted, if judged necessary by the academic supervisor.

Grant award period: In the case of PhD researchers from developing countries, the grants will usually be awarded for a maximum of a four-year period.

Other details :
Part of the research should be conducted in the home country and part in Groningen.
The criteria for approval cover the following topics:

• Academic excellence. This is shown by the academic performance of the students and may be confirmed by letters of recommendation from university professors.
• The contribution of the candidate’s education in terms of strengthening the scientific capacity in the domestic development country.
• The perspectives of contribution to a long-term linkage between the university in the developing country and the University of Groningen.
• A proper balance between male and female candidates.
• Spreading over various disciplines (faculties).
• Regional spreading over various continents.

Eligible candidates for scholarship grant:

1. have a good knowledge of the English language.

2. be in good health, so that health insurance in the Netherlands can be
arranged.

3. be available for the whole period of the fellowship and be able to take part in the entire study programme.

4. have no other means of financing the study.

5. Their education should strengthen the academic capacity.

6. the applicant should be employed by a research institute or university in a developing country

7. the application should also be supported by this organisation.

8. the University of Groningen must be able to provide an academic supervisor who will be responsible for the scientific supervision of the research.

Applications must include :
In principle, applications for research grants may only be submitted by individuals from developing countries if endorsed by a professor of the University of Groningen and with the support of their home institution / partner university. The application should contain an elaborated research proposal or pre-proposal. The application may also be submitted by the academic supervisor at the University of Groningen or at the home institute in the developing country.

FELLOWSHIP

ELIGIBILITY

These Fellowships are only for Indian Nationals studying in India.

The Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, offers attractive fellowships (Rs. 4000 to Rs. 7000 p.m) and contingency grants (Four months fellowship p.a) for students studying in Basic Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. Selection to the program takes into account academic excellence and demonstrated interest in pursuing research career. Selection procedures are different for Basic Sciences, SP (Engineering) and SP (Medicine) and SP(Basic Sciences). All of them, however, include an interview for final selection.

At the University of Westminster you can apply for a UK scholarship once you have been offered a place (either conditional or unconditional) on a course at the University, but before you start your course. MBA Scholarships

Amount: 50 per cent tuition fee waivers.

Eligibility: You must hold an offer for the part-time MBA degree.

Criteria: Academic excellence, career progression and financial need. Preference will be given to you if you work in the voluntary or public sectors.

Alumni Scholarships

These scholarships are gathered from income earned by the alumni affinity services. They are available to you if you are a graduate of any University of Westminster undergraduate degree and plan to proceed to a full-time Masters degree within the University.

Amount: £2,000 tuition fee waivers.

Eligibility: You must be a University of Westminster graduate progressing to a full-time Masters degree at the University.

Criteria: Academic excellence and financial need.

Full Fee Waiver Scholarships

Amount: Full tuition fee waivers.

Eligibility: You must be an international student from a developing country and hold an offer for a full-time Masters degree.

Criteria: Academic excellence, development potential and financial need.

Half Fee Waiver Scholarships

Amount: 50 per cent tuition fee waivers.

These scholarships are offered by Westminster Business School (WBS) to you if you are academically exceptional.

Your parent in the diplomatic post must be based in the UK, and you must hold an offer for a full-time undergraduate degree at the University. The scholarship is for the length of the course (3 or 4 years) and is subject to satisfactory academic progress.

East Timor Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded in conjunction with the Ai-Kameli Trust and International Students House.

Amount: Full tuition fee waiver, accommodation at International Students House, living expenses and flights to and from London for the period of study..

Eligibility: You must be from East Timor and wish to pursue a full-time undergraduate degree at the University of Westminster. You must be interested in studying a subject useful to the development of East Timor, and intend to return on completion of the course.

Criteria: Academic excellence, development potential and financial need.

Gambia Biomedical Sciences Scholarship

This scholarship is only open to you if you have successfully completed the University of Westminster Diploma in Biomedical Sciences. It is a three year scholarship, subject to satisfactory academic progress, for the full-time BSc Honours Biomedical Sciences.

Amount: Full tuition fee waiver, accommodation, living expenses and annual flights to and from London.

Eligibility: You must be a citizen of the Gambia and hold an offer for the full-time BSc Honours Biomedical Sciences.

Criteria: Academic excellence, development potential and financial need. You must make a case as to how the skills and knowledge acquired on the course will be helpful to the development of the Gambia. You must also commit to return to the Gambia on completion of the course.

Deadline: 31 May 2009.

Ken Bird Memorial Scholarship

Ken Bird was formerly Chair of the University’s Technology and Design Department. This scholarship reflects Ken’s interest in South Asia as well as his desire to help provide educational opportunities for women. The family of Ken Bird will take an active role in the choice and welfare of the scholar. The scholarship is awarded jointly with International Students House.

Amount: Full tuition fee waiver and accommodation at International Students House.

Eligibility: Preference will be given to you if you are a female student from India or Sri Lanka and hold an offer for a full-time undergraduate degree in a technology based subject. The scholarship will be renewed each year based on your academic performance.

Criteria: Academic excellence and financial need.

Deadline: 31 May 2009.

Application procedure and presentation guidelines

* Apply for scholarships only after you have been offered a place (conditional or unconditional) on a course at the University of Westminster. Please do not apply if you have already enrolled or begun a course of study at the University of Westminster (except in the case of Progression Scholarships and the Westminster Careers Awards).

* Read the information on individual scholarships carefully and ensure that you only apply for ones that you are eligible for and meet the criteria of. For example, do not apply for the Tanzania Scholarship unless you are from Tanzania.

* Photocopy the application form at the back of our scholarships brochure or print the form from our website.

* Do use the same application form when applying for more than one scholarship.

* Attach the relevant papers only and keep your supporting documents to a minimum. The quantity of documents sent does not give any advantage.

* Attach translations where supporting documents are in any other language but English.

* Word process the application as far as possible. If handwriting the application, please ensure it is written clearly and in block letters. Illegible applications will be considered ineligible.

* Keep your application concise.
