One postgraduate scholarship is available for a suitably qualified candidate with a good Honours degree in a social or health science discipline to undertake research studies leading to a PhD in occupational health. This scholarship is funded by an ARC Linkage Projects grant and will provide support for three years on a full-time basis. The successful candidate will join a research team in a dynamic and stimulating work environment.

The project is titled Caring for the Carers: Occupational Health and Safety in Homecare. The provision of home-based care is a significant and growing area of employment in Australia. Homecare workers support very vulnerable clients. At the same time, they are themselves exposed to significant health and safety risks, which have not been widely investigated. The project will identify OHS risks and hazards in homecare work. The PhD student’s research will examine OHS risks and hazards in one type of homecare work – youth services. Their research will contribute to the development of interventions to secure healthier, safer and more sustainable workplaces for homecare workers.

Eligibility:

Applicants should have an Honours 1 or 2A Degree in a social or health sciences discipline. A Masters level qualification or background in occupational health and safety, industrial relations or work psychology would be an advantage. International students can apply, but the scholarship does not cover any tuition fees payable by international students.

Vacant PhD scholarships at CBS, Denmark

If you are among the top students in your field, and you are interested in acquiring research skills at a very high level, the three-year PhD programme at CBS may be for to you. The programme allows you to conduct research within a topic of your own choice under the supervision of CBS professors, and supported by research training courses. The programme is highly international, and you are expected to participate in international research conferences and spend time abroad as a visiting PhD student.

See the CBS homepage for more information about the PhD programme:http://uk.cbs.dk/phd .

CBS PhD graduates are held in high esteem not only in academia and research institutions but also in government and business where their research qualifications are increasingly demanded. Two thirds of CBS PhD graduates go on to employment outside universities and public research institutions.

CBS now invites applications for PhD scholarships. The scholarships are fully salaried positions, according to the national Danish collective agreement.

The scholarship includes the tuition fees, office space, travel grants plus a salary, currently starting with per month app. DKK 23,370 (app. 3,100 euro) up to DKK 28,477 (app. 3,800 euro) depending on seniority, a monthly non- pensionable allowance (app. 165 euro) plus a pension contribution equivalent to 17,1 per cent on 85 per cent of the base salary.

Your application should include a research proposal that addresses a topic within the CBS research profile. CBS covers all of the classic fields within business economics and business languages connected with the management and operation of public and private organizations – for example, marketing, finance, accounting, organization and translation. In addition, research is carried out in a number of subjects important for the understanding of the challenges firms face in the global knowledge society. These include not only business law, informatics, innovation, international economics, inter-cultural understanding, communication and media research, but also business oriented research in such fields as philosophy, political science, design, anthropology, and history. Please consult the CBS homepage (http://uk.cbs.dk/forskning_viden) for further information about the research topics of CBS.

Closing date: Friday 2 October 2009 at 12.00 noon

Further information can be obtained from the CBS Office of PhD Education, e-mail phdadmission@cbs.dk. Potential applicants are encouraged to identify a preferred department for their PhD studies and contact this department well in advance the closing date in order to develop a research proposal. (Please note that Dan- ish holidays are generally taken in July).

PhD Scholarships on Media, Empowerment and Democracy in East Africa

Deadline: 10 August 2009.

The Danish-East African research project, “People Speaking Back? Media, Empowerment and Democracy in East Africa (MEDIeA)”, funded by the Danish Development Agency (Danida), offers two full-time PhD scholarships (36 months) starting on January 1st 2010, using ethnographic perspectives. One will be registered as a PhD student at University of Nairobi, the other at University of Dar es Salaam. Funding follow provisions of Kenya and Tanzania universities.

About MEDIeA

The overall objective of MEDIeA is to explore the role civil society driven media and communication technologies potentially can have in enhancing participatory governance processes in East Africa, more specifically in Kenya and Tanzania. The core inquiry of MEDIeA grows from a concern about how young people are secured a role in both the local, national and regional development processes. The research project’s analytical challenge is to understand the ways and means in which youth as ordinary citizens engage with such civil society driven media and communication platforms and what socio-cultural and policy related outcomes this may have.

MEDIeA comprises of a team of 4 researchers in addition to the two PhD students that are about to be contracted. In Kenya, the team consists of Associate Professor Norbert Wildermuth from University of Southern Denmark and Associate Research Professor Winnie Mitullah from University of Nairobi. In Tanzania, the team consists of Professor and Principal Investigator of MEDIeA, Thomas Tufte and Assistant Professor Datius Rweyemanu.

In addition to empirical research, the MEDIeA project comprises of components of dissemination, capacity building and policy dialogue. The research program is hosted by ØRECOMM – Consortium for Communication and Glocal Change at Department of Communication, Business and Information Technologies, Roskilde University, Denmark.

Objectives of the PhD

It is the general objective of the announced PhD scholarships to strengthen the overall research efforts of MEDIeA in Kenya and Tanzania. The PhD students are expected to provide community based research which uncovers the synergies and communication relations between everyday life, media use, citizen engagement in social and political processes. The announced PhD projects can be specified as follows:

Kenya: Communication, e-participation and digital inclusion: a media ethnographic study. See detailed description on http://orecomm.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/phd-projectdescriptions-mediea-2009.pdf

Tanzania: Media use, citizenship and participatory governance: a media ethnographic study in Tanzania See detailed description on http://orecomm.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/phd-projectdescriptions-mediea-2009.pdf

Who can apply?

We invite applications from students with an MA in social sciences or humanities and with experience in qualitative empirical research, preferably in the field of qualitative reception studies, media ethnigraphy and/or participatory communication studies. Applicants should be prepared to work extended periods in the ‘field’, in close and prolonged cooperation with the non-governmental and community-based organisations selected as case studies by the MEDIeA team of senior researchers. Applicants must be able to communicate in the relevant vernacular language, besides English, as well as demonstrate the necessary ‘social’ abilities to do research based on a participant observation approach. Finally, it would be beneficial if applicants also have experience with survey-based, quantitative research designs or equivalent qualifications.

Application procedure

Deadline: 10 August 2009.

The University of Luxembourg is looking within its Computer Science and Communications Research Unit for a:

PhD STUDENT in Computer Science (M/F) Ref : R1F107K30
4-year job (consisting of two 2-year contracts) 40 hours/week

On the topic of reasoning and formal argumentation in the field of trust management

The University of Luxembourg is the only university in Luxembourg, founded on 13 August 2003 amid much fanfare. Prior to that, there were several higher educational institutions such as the cour universitaire or the IST that offered one or two years of academic studies. Luxembourger students had to go abroad in order to complete their studies at a university (usually to Belgium, France, Germany, Austria, and the United Kingdom). The new university makes it possible for these students to complete their studies in their own country, as well as attract foreign academic interest to Luxembourg

PhD Research Scholarship

Deadline: September, 30th 2007

Reasoning about trust is a process that often involves the application of rules of thumb, general guidelines or argument and counterargument. During recent years, the field of formal argumentation has produced a range of formalisms, as well as software implementations, to deal with issues such as nonmonotonic reasoning, decision making and agent communication. In this context, the University of Luxembourg is currently setting up a research project (Advanced Argumentation Techniques for Trust Management, AASTM) to apply the approach of formal argumentation to the issue of trust management.

The work consists of two parts:

* The formation of a formal theory on argumentation for trust management
* An implementation of this formal theory as set of software components

Requirements:

1. M. Sc in Computer Science, artificial intelligence or mathematics (no older than 5 years)
2. Strong programming skills
3. Although a background on formal argumentation is not necessary, candidates should preferably be familiar with various forms of formal logic and theoretical computer science.

The position is associated with an annual salary between 23400 and 25450 euro after tax, depending on the profile of the candidate.

Applications mentioning the reference number are to be sent no later than September, 30th 2007 and should include a letter of motivation, a complete CV and a copy of the M. Sc. Diploma including a transcript of courses taken (with grades) and the names and contact details of two referees. These are to be submitted by e-mail to Prof. Dr. Leon Van der Torre (leon.vandertorre@uni.lu) and Dr.Martin Caminada (martin.caminada@uni.lu)

Any enquiry concerning this position can be sent to Martin Caminada.

The University of Luxembourg is an equal opportunity employer.
