International Graduate Program for Advanced Science (IGPAS) is an interdisciplinary graduate program in the Graduate School of Science, Tohoku University.

It was established in October 2004 as the first international graduate program founded in Japanese national universities. IGPAS offers courses in English for international students who are eager to obtain master’s and doctoral degrees from the Graduate School of Science. It is also aims to educate Japanese students to exert their abilities as internationally-active, professional scientists.

IGPAS has proudly reserved positions of Japanese government scholarship for its master’s students since its foundation, and in 2008, IGPAS-Super Doctoral Course (SDC) has been started for doctoral students jointly with the Institute for the International Advanced Research and Education (IIARE) of Tohoku University. Students of IGPAS-SDC benefit from fellowship by IIARE to promote world top-level, interdisciplinary research at the Graduate School of Science.

Prospective students will have excellent opportunities to study modern science and conduct cutting-edge research with top-level scientists currently working at Tohoku University.

IGPAS is a 5-year graduate program as the combination of a 2-year master’s program and a 3-year doctoral program. In the interdisciplinary program, students are affiliated to one of six departments in three groups based on the GCOE programs: (i) Chemistry, (ii) Mathematics, Astronomy, and Physics, and (iii) Earth Science and Geophysics.

The academic year of IGPAS starts in October. The Graduate School of Science will admit at most 20 students each for the master’s and doctoral programs for IGPAS 2009.

Master’s Program
Japanese government (MEXT) scholarship for 8 students
by The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT; Monbukagakusho)

? Monthly stipend of 170,000 yen/month for the first year and 160,000 yen for the following years
? Flight tickets between the country of the student’s nationality and Japan

Doctoral Program

The course offers an integration of general and specialist engineering subject knowledge. For example, the modules Business Environmental Management and Engineering Design (work based learning) support the understanding of these subject areas while at the same time seeking to optimise the application of existing and emerging technologies in these fields.

The FEA module applies appropriate theoretical and practical methods to the analysis and solution of engineering problems while the Project Management and individual Project modules provide the technical and commercial leadership skills so much sought after by modern industry.

On completion of the course students will be well placed to apply for Chartered Engineer status with one of the accredited institutions. With the experience and technical expertise gained from the course students often find further career opportunities open to them, either within their own companies or beyond. In addition to the actual platform to further enhance their Continuing Professional Development profile.

Gates Cambridge Scholarships are competed for internationally. There is some variation in procedure between countries, and the competition may run along different timetables to meet the academic schedules of different parts of the world.

The Gates Cambridge Trust takes advice from the academic committees in Cambridge responsible for determining admission to the University about the respective merits of the applicants. On the basis of that advice, applicants shortlisted for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship will be invited to an interview.

Candidates who are not successful in winning a Gates Cambridge Scholarship will automatically be considered for awards offered by the other Cambridge Trusts.

One student will be selected per semester and the commencement of the scholarship will be the same as the commencement of the student’s Bachelor of Engineering. The closing date is 15 December for students commencing in February and 1 June for students commencing in July. The application form must be submitted together with the International Coursework Application form to either a UTS representative or UTS: International.

The scholarship covers 50% of the tuition fees commencing from the first semester of study for a period of four years.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must: expect to complete the equivalent year 12 exam in 2007 overseas; meet the normal entry requirements for the Bachelor of Engineering; and obtain an IELTS score of 6.0 overall with 6.0 in writing (http://www.ielts.org). The Engineering (ICT) International Undergraduate Scholarship offers students the opportunity to obtain an undergraduate qualification at UTS:Engineering. The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of the student’s year 12 (or equivalent) results. The scholarship is also open to diploma holders.

The scholarship will be awarded twice a year for an intake for Autumn and Spring Semesters.

INDOCOMTECH 2007 present in the new format. This change was due to the participant request on the exhibition space had increased in the last INDOCOMTECH 2006. In the previous year of INDOCOMTECH exhibition, INDOCOMTECH presented with 2 halls format, Hall A and Hall B.

Therefore in the year 2007 INDOCOMTECH 2007 will offer 4 halls format, there are Hall A, Hall B, Cendrawasih Hall and Plennary Hall Balai Sidang Jakarta Convention Center. With the additional exhibition space become 3 halls, the organizer expects the participants will become more various and get the expected space for the exhibition.

The INDOCOMTECH 2007 will be held at the end of the year, simultaneously with the Indonesian Book Fair 2007 that will be held in Assembly Hall and Main Lobby.
